Sharing Energy Support at Richmond Mencap’s Meeting Place

Sep 17, 2025

Recently, Jonny from National Mencap visited Richmond Mencap’s Meeting Place to talk about energy costs, practical ways to save, and the support available to help alleviate financial hardship.

It was a fantastic opportunity to connect with the community, raise awareness, and ensure that people with a learning disability could access clear, practical guidance about managing household bills and staying warm.

What was offered on the day

Attendees had the chance to explore Easy Read information from Mencap, which supported people with:

  • Understanding energy bills

  • Finding ways to save energy and stay warm

  • Getting help with the cost of food, energy, and water

  • Managing money and household bills

  • Finding out about food banks and fuel vouchers

  • Signing up to the Priority Services Register for extra support

In addition, there was face-to-face support and signposting, with information shared about Mencap’s Learning Disability Helpline for anyone who needed extra advice or ongoing guidance.

An Energy Saving Pack was also on display, showing practical items included to help people stay warm.

Why this matters

Energy and household costs remain a major concern for many families. Being able to access straightforward information and know where to turn for support made a real difference to those who attended.

The session helped to give people the tools they need to feel more confident about managing bills, saving energy, and finding out about the help available locally and nationally.
