Ending disability Hate Crime together.
The Mencap Stand By Me campaign was launched during Learning Disability week in June 2011. This is a campaign to help people understand what disability Hate Crime is and for Mencap to work with the Police to sign up to a set of promises (a charter). Disability Hate Crime is when a person has been a victim of Crime because they have a disability. The Crime can be name calling, being pushed, kicked or punched. It can also be something much worse and some people have very sadly, been killed.
Richmond Mencap is a reporting centre so anyone who uses learning disability services and wants to report a Hate Crime can come to our offices and speak to Laura, who will support you and take a report of the Crime.
We are very pleased to announce that after continued work with Richmond Borough Police on Monday July 15th 2011, Steve Kyte, Chief Inspector of Community and Partnerships did sign up to the National Mencap "Stand by Me" campaign charter. This is a major success for everyone with a disability in Richmond and an acknowledgment of the positive work and seriousness that the Police take, when responding to disabilist Hate Crime in the borough.
As you are all now fully aware the government and local government are proposing changes to services Richmond Mencap are opposed to any cuts that affect frontline services to people with learning disabilities and their carers.
We will be updating this page constantly with useful links to petitions, consultations and ways to campaign and protest about the cuts or see our twitter feed.
Please talk to your local councillor or MP about the cuts
