Advocacy

Advocacy and self-advocacy are when you speak out and take control of your life, this can be speaking out in your home, college, work, local community or wider community. It can be about any part of your life and helps you to feel confident in talking about things that are important to you and getting support from people, like family, friends, care managers, support workers or a professional advocate who can support you to make important decisions about your life.

Self-advocacy is people speaking up for themselves. Self-advocacy is important because many people with learning disabilities spend their lives being told what to do. If you are always told what to do and never listened to, you can get to the point where you don't even know how to make a decision for yourself. Speaking up is something people with learning disabilities need support to learn to do and other people need to learn how to understand us.

Self advocacy groups are a way for us to meet and;

Share our experiences

Support each other

Learn to speak up

Talk about our rights and take action

Speak up about local services and what is important to us.
